Two Group Members Awarded Research Fellowships

Dr. Dale Keefe with NSERC USRA students
Kyle Johnston and Janet Pickup
Two members of the Keefe research group were recently recognized at an awards reception hosted by Cape Breton University Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) representative Dr. David McCorquodale. Kyle Johnston and Janet Pickup were honoured for receiving Undergraduate Summer Research Awards from NSERC. The awards allow the students to work full time during the summer under Dr. Keefe’s supervision.
Johnston, who has worked with Keefe since May 2007, will be developing computer software for the analysis of vibrational spectra as well as studying mathematical models of the effect of the local electric field in infrared spectroscopy. Johnston has completed two years toward an engineering degree.
Pickup will carry out experimental measurements of the infrared and Raman properties of cyclohexane and hexane. Pickup has worked with Keefe since June 2005, joining the Keefe research team upon completion of high school. She has completed three years toward a B.Sc. honours degree in chemistry.
